Neeru dose/Thellavu

Everyday brekkie in Dakshina Kannada(South Karnataka) families is this soft neeru dose/thellavu made out of ground raw rice, bit of grated coconut , just 2 main ingredients and soft delicious neeru dose is ready to be made.
This is a gluten free recipe and also no fermentation is required!

Isn't that easy? Only effort required is in the end cleaning up the messy cooking top but the efforts are worth it. For those who find tedious to grind could use rice flour too, but ground rice neeru dose is way better in taste than the rice flour version. Lets jump to the ground rice neeru dose recipe.

Ingredients:(Makes around 22 dosas)
Raw white rice-3 cups
Grated fresh coconut-1 cup
Water-around 8 cups
Salt to taste
Ghee to smear

Recipe:

  1. After washing the rice, soak raw white rice in water for 6hrs or preferably overnight.
  2. Grind it with water adding the fresh coconut and bit of salt to a fine smooth batter.
  3. Now add remaining water, around 7 to 7.5 cups to make the batter consistency as that of water.
  4. Mix well and check for salt.
  5. On a hot griddle, smear ghee, pour ladle full of batter and cover and cook for around a minute or two.
  6. Smear ghee on top and remove them on to a plate. They are ready to serve with chutney.

Notes:

  • To prevent them from sticking to each other while piling up the dosas folding into half, ensure that the shiny portion face outside. That way you could pile up as many as you want.
  • The batter consistency should be very thin, unlike usual dosa batter. As the name neeru means water in kannada.

Enjoy the dish! n don't forget Eat and Eat little MORE.. :)
