No coconut No Lentil Sambar

Sambar usually is prepared using coconut or with the help of lentils tur dal/yellow pigeon pea lentils. But aren't you amazed to know that sambar could be made even without using coconut as well as lentils? Infact a sambar in a jiffy. I used gram flour to thicken the gravy of the sambar. Here is the simple yet tasty sambar recipe.

Ingredients:
Tomato-1 diced
Onion-1 chopped lengthwise
Mustard seeds-1 tsp
Cumin seeds- 1tsp
Red chilly powder-1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
Coriander powder-1 tsp
Sambar masala-1 tsp
Oil-1 tbsp. + 1 tsp.
Gram flour-2 tbsp.
Water-4 cups + 3 tbsp.
Curry leaves-1 sprig
Dry red chilly-1
Salt to taste

Recipe:
  1. Heat oil in a pan, when hot add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, cumin seeds and let them splatter. Now add onions and sauté.
  2. Now add tomatoes, turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder and mix. Let tomatoes cook till mushy.
  3. Now add around 2 cups of water to the cooked tomatoes.
  4. Prepare a lump free mixture of gram flour and 3 tbsp. water.
  5. With constant stirring on a medium flame add the gram flour water mixture to the cooking tomatoes in step 3.
  6. Stir well and further add 2 cups of water to get desired consistency and cook till it comes to rolling boil.
  7. Add sambar masala at this stage and mix.Add salt to taste.
  8. Tamper it, for tampering heat a tsp. full of oil in a small pan, add remaining mustard seeds and dry red chilly when hot and as they crackle, switch off the flame and add curry leaves.Pour the seasoning over the sambar. Mix well. Sambar is ready to go with plain rice or with dosas. We enjoyed this with masala dosa.
