Kayi Holige/Kayi Obbatu/Coconut Stuffed Sweet Bread/Nariyal Puran Poli

Being a kannadiga it would be not fine if I don't post a holige recipe and it is the right time I felt as it was Yugadi yesterday.
Holige/Obbattu/Poli is a sweet bread which is stuffed with either bele/bengal gram and sugar/jaggery stuffing. Stuffing could be even coconut and jaggery. It is a kind of sweetmeat that is prepared for festivals,weddings,engagements,celebrating birth of a baby or anything for that matter which brings joy and happiness to all.
Festivals for which this obbattu/puran poli is made in Karnataka is for Yugadi meaning the new year for people from karnataka,the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa.Marwari, people of Rajasthan celebrate the same day as their new year day Thapna. Sindhis, people from Sindh, celebrate the same day as their New Year day Cheti Chand. Manipuris also celebrate their New Year (Sajibu nongma panba) on the same day. It is observed as Baisakhi in Punjab and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu. However, it is not celebrated on the same day as Yugadi in Tamil Nadu. It is also celebrated in Mauritius. Hindus of Bali and Indonesia also celebrate their new year on the same day as Nyepi.
'Yuga' is the word for 'epoch' or 'era', and 'ādi' stands for 'the beginning' in Sanskrit
The day, begins with ritual showers (oil bath) followed by prayers and sumptuous feast.
Recipe is as follows:
This is just for 4 obbattus. You can easily double up the recipe for more.
I was not left out with any extra filling nor the dough.

Ingredients:
For kanaka/wrap
All purpose flour/Maida-1/4 cup
Chiroti rawa/Fine semoline-1/4 cup
Oil-3 tbsp
Water-5-6tbsp
pinch of salt

For stuffing:
Grated coconut-1/2 cup
Jaggery-1/2 cup
Cardamom powder-1/4 tsp
Rice flour-1 tbsp
Water-1tsp
Ghee-1tsp

Recipe:
I decided to give a pictorial representation for better understanding here.Million thanks to my hubby who was patient enough to get me the snaps taken when I was busy with Obbattu/poli preparation.
First prepare the wrap/kanaka for the obbattu/poli.
For dough preparation:
Mix the dry dough ingredients well and now add sufficient water and prepare a pliable dough.
Now the important task for making wrap comes. Keep adding oil little by little and keep kneading till you get a very soft doughwhich takes the shape as desired when pressed with just fingers.
Now let it rest for 1 hour atleast covered.
For stuffing preparation:
Grind the grated coconut well without water.
In a pan add 1 tsp water and add jaggery and let it melt.Now add 1 tsp ghee.
Now add grated coconut to it and mix well.Add cardamom powder and again mix till it gives out an aroma.
Now add rice flour and mix well so that the moisture in it is easily gone.Cook for 2-3 minutes and then keep aside.
Your stuffing is ready.
Some people add poppy seeds, but I kind of didn't want any other flavour than the coconut and jaggery which are the main ingredients here.
 
Follow the simple steps below:
  1. Pic shows the dough which has been resting for an hour.
  2. Prepare lime sized balls of stuffing.
  3. Pinch of a small ball off the dough.On a greased plastic sheet or banana leaf place the pinched small ball of kanaka/wrap dough.Idea behind is that the outer covering ball should be always smaller than the stuffing ball.
  4. Spread the kanaka/wrap ball little by your greased fingers and place the stuffing ball it it.Cling from all sides the outer dough and cover the stuffing well.
  5. Now press with your hands little and then using a roller roll evenly to a uniform,very thin roti.As thin as possible because the more thinner the poli,the more tastier.
  6. Place on the tawa/flat pan and cook on medium flame.
  7. Having cooked one side flip and cook another side.
  8. Polis are ready to serve.Serve hot with ghee which is the most commonly used accompaniment.

I rather drizzled ghee on either sides and me and my family enjoyed them without  any accompaniment as they are as such very very tasty.

  1. Nice and easy step by step illustrations Sangeetha.. Saw this only at my marriage at my In laws house.. and initially thought Kadle Bele ( Bengal Gram ) holige is better .. but now like and enjoy this too..Thanks for the demo..

    1. My pleasure..Even when I was kid, I used to enjoy the holiges which we get in havyak wedding and pooja functions. Kayi holige was not that common, only bele holige was common. But nowadays even kayi holige is famous. I thought of giving a try and my first try was successful. Really happy about it. :)
